Description

This quick and easy Beef Biryani comes together in about 45 minutes and is all made in one pot for a comforting family meal.


Ingredients

  • 2 kgs beef (mutton or lamb can also work)
  • 1 cup full-fat Greek yogurt
  • 2 tbsp salt
  • 2 tbsp Kashmiri chili powder
  • 1 tbsp chili flakes
  • 2 tbsp coriander powder
  • 2 tbsp cumin powder
  • ½ tbsp turmeric
  • 2 tbsp homemade biryani masala
  • 6 garlic cloves (minced)
  • 3 inches ginger root (grated)
  • 4 large tomatoes (diced)
  • 2 green chilies
  • 1 cup fried onions
  • ½ cup chopped mint
  • ½ cup chopped coriander
  • 1.5 kgs basmati rice (washed and soaked)
  • 1 tbsp salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp cumin seeds
  • 3 pcs star anise
  • 1 tsp black peppercorns
  • 7 whole cloves
  • 7 green cardamoms
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 6 lemon slices
  • 7 dried plums
  • 10 slices tomato and more lemon slices & green chilies for garnish
  • ¼ cup fried onions for topping
  • Yellow food color (optional)
  • ½ cup oil saved from cooked meat

Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice under cold running water until the water runs clear, then soak it for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Make the spice blend by blending tomatoes, garlic, ginger, and green chilies until smooth.
  3. Fry the onions in oil until golden brown and caramelized.
  4. Marinate the beef with yogurt, spices, and prepared paste.
  5. Let the beef marinate in the refrigerator for 3-4 hours or overnight if possible.
  6. Cook the beef on low-medium heat until tender and gravy thickens.
  7. Boil the rice with water, salt, and spices until about 80% done, then drain.
  8. Layer the rice and beef in a pot, topping with tomatoes, lemons, green chilies, and herbs.
  9. Prepare for dum by adding food color and covering the pot.
  10. Let it cook on low heat for 25 minutes.
  11. Serve gently fluffing the layers and enjoy with raita or salad.

Notes

Serve with cool yogurt raita, cucumbers, or a crunchy salad. It is freezer friendly for up to 3 months.
