Ingredients

- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon thyme (fresh or dried)
- 1 pre-made pastry crust
- 1 cup shredded cheese (such as Gruyère or Swiss)
- 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat until sizzling.
- Add the sliced onions, sugar, and salt, then cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are beautifully caramelized.
- Stir in the thyme during the last few minutes of cooking.
- Roll out the pastry crust and fit it into a tart pan.
- Sprinkle the cheese evenly over the crust, then layer the caramelized onions on top.
- If desired, beat the egg and brush it over the edges of the crust.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Allow to cool slightly before slicing and serving.
Notes
This tart can be customized with leftover vegetables or different types of cheese. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for 3-4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
