Description

A delicious Caramelized Onion Tart that’s quick and easy to prepare, perfect for a weeknight dinner that your family will love.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon thyme (fresh or dried)
  • 1 pre-made pastry crust
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (such as Gruyère or Swiss)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat until sizzling.
  3. Add the sliced onions, sugar, and salt, then cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are beautifully caramelized.
  4. Stir in the thyme during the last few minutes of cooking.
  5. Roll out the pastry crust and fit it into a tart pan.
  6. Sprinkle the cheese evenly over the crust, then layer the caramelized onions on top.
  7. If desired, beat the egg and brush it over the edges of the crust.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  9. Allow to cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

This tart can be customized with leftover vegetables or different types of cheese. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for 3-4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
