- 1 cup water
- ½ teaspoon almond extract (or vanilla extract)
- Red food coloring (optional)
- 1–2 tablespoons bourbon or brandy (optional)
Instructions
- Wash and stem the cherries, removing the pits.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar and water, stirring until sugar dissolves (about 2-3 minutes).
- Stir in almond extract and food coloring, cooking for another minute until fragrant.
- Place the pitted cherries into a clean jar and pour syrup over them, ensuring they are submerged.
- Seal the jar tightly and refrigerate for at least a week to allow flavors to meld.
- Enjoy the cherries on ice cream, in cocktails, or straight from the jar!
Notes
These maraschino cherries keep fresh in the refrigerator for 3-4 weeks. Can be warmed slightly before serving if desired.
