Description

A delightful and versatile recipe for homemade maraschino cherries that are perfect for topping desserts or cocktails.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups fresh cherries, pitted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (can substitute with brown sugar)
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract (or vanilla extract)
  • Red food coloring (optional)
  • 12 tablespoons bourbon or brandy (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash and stem the cherries, removing the pits.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar and water, stirring until sugar dissolves (about 2-3 minutes).
  3. Stir in almond extract and food coloring, cooking for another minute until fragrant.
  4. Place the pitted cherries into a clean jar and pour syrup over them, ensuring they are submerged.
  5. Seal the jar tightly and refrigerate for at least a week to allow flavors to meld.
  6. Enjoy the cherries on ice cream, in cocktails, or straight from the jar!

Notes

These maraschino cherries keep fresh in the refrigerator for 3-4 weeks. Can be warmed slightly before serving if desired.
