Description

Delicious and easy-to-make cinnamon sugar twists using sourdough discard, perfect for snacks or desserts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (240 ml) sourdough discard
  • 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 1 tsp (4 g) baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp (3 g) salt
  • 4 tbsp (56 g) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 1/3 cup (67 g) brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tsp (4 g) cinnamon powder
  • 2 tbsp (25 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Optional: 1/4 cup chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts)
  • Optional: 1 tsp orange zest

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Stir the sourdough discard, melted butter, vanilla (if using), and the beaten egg in a separate bowl until smooth.
  4. Add the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently for about 3 minutes.
  6. Roll the dough into a 12 by 8 inch rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, and granulated sugar in a small bowl.
  8. Brush the rolled dough with the reserved beaten egg and sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over it.
  9. Cut the dough into 1 inch strips and twist each strip 3 to 5 times.
  10. Place the twists on the prepared baking sheet and lightly brush with egg wash.
  11. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, until golden brown.
  12. Cool on a wire rack for about 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

These twists can be served warm with whipped cream cheese or fruit preserves. They can also be stored in an airtight container for 2-3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
