- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 1/2 teaspoons cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
- 3 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 tablespoon green food coloring
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter (at room temperature)
- 8 ounces cream cheese (at room temperature)
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (for frosting)
- 1/4 teaspoon salt (for frosting)
- 4 to 4 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 to 2 tablespoons milk or heavy cream (if necessary)
- Green sprinkles (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Sift together your flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
- Mix together the sugar and vegetable oil in another bowl.
- Add in the eggs, vanilla extract, vinegar, and buttermilk, blending until smooth.
- Stir in the green food coloring.
- Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing gently until just combined.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool the cakes in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
- Beat together the butter and cream cheese for the frosting until smooth.
- Add the vanilla and salt, mixing until combined.
- Gradually add in powdered sugar, mixing until creamy.
- Spread the cream cheese frosting on top of one cake layer and stack the other on top.
- Frost the top and sides of the cake and add sprinkles if desired.
Notes
This cake can be customized with different colors or flavors of frosting. It can also be made ahead and stored to save time before serving.
